Cerebrovascular diseases include stroke and other disorders of the blood vessels of the brain. In 1999 2,684 persons in the state of Louisiana died from a type of cerebrovascular disease, giving the state a death rate for this cause of 61.4 per 100,000, which was also the National rate, placing Louisiana 30th. However, Louisiana’s age-adjusted rate was 69.6, bringing its national ranking up to 14.

By 2004, cerebrovascular disease in Louisiana had an age-adjusted death rate of 59.2 per 100,000 residents. This compares unfavorably with the national age-adjusted death rate from this source of 50 per 100,000.

A childhood stroke support group, the Pediatric Stroke Network offers information and support to families of infants, children, and young adults who have prenatal stroke, childhood stroke, infant stroke, perinatal stroke, neonatal stroke or in utero stroke.
