Louisiana’s Major Health Problems
Pneumonia

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Center for Health Statistics combines pneumonia and influenza together. In 1999 1,008 persons in the state of Louisiana died from pneumonia or influenza, giving the state a death rate for this cause of 23.1 per 100,000, which is under the National rate of 23.4, ranking Louisiana as 29th. However, Louisiana’s age-adjusted rate was 26.6, bringing its national ranking up to 16.

By 2003, the combined death rate per 100,000 residents for pneumonia and influenza, adjusted for age, had gone down to 21.8 in Louisiana. This was still above the national age-adjusted rate of 20.4 per 100,000.
