Louisiana’s Major Health Problems
Diabetes Mellitus
One of Louisiana’s most serious health problems, diabetes mellitus caused the death of 1,687 persons in 1999 for a death rate for that disease of 38.6 per 100,000. This rate was the 2nd highest of any state in the nation, which as a whole had a rate of 25.2. The state’s age-adjusted rate was 42.5, the highest in the country.

In 2003 Louisiana’s age-adjusted death rate for diabetes mellitus was 39.8 per 100,000 residents, virtually unchanged from four years earlier. In comparison, the national rate for that year was 24.4.

Highlights diabetes data sources, maps, conferences, publications, and education programs, and provides links to other information sources.

Joslin Diabetes Center (Harvard Medical School)

Offers a broad array of diabetes news, discussions, and materials in Spanish and Chinese. Of particular interest are the Beginner’s Guide, which provides basic patient information and answers to frequently asked questions, and the Diabetes Library, which includes factsheets on the condition.

Mayo Clinic

Find basic information about diabetes as well as explore treatment options. Also learn how to take control of diabetes.

Learn information on diabetes, Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, diabetes foot care, and diabetes diet. This site has very good illustrations and the articles are easy to read and understand.

National Diabetes Education Program

A partnership of the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other public and private organizations.

National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institutes of Health)

The most important government site for diabetes information, it provides an overview of the disease, in addition to materials on treatment, complications, guidelines, statistics and other information and resources. Includes Spanish translations for some documents and materials for minority groups and other underserved populations.

National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases

Provides a gateway to information about diabetes and related diseases, including those of the kidneys and gastrointestinal system; focuses on ongoing research.
